Rodriguez - Rich Folks Hoax - Chords and Lyrics

It was said Sixto Rodriguez would be the next Bob Dylan.
I never quite got into Dylan's music, but Rich Folks Hoax was one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar.
All those years ago, thinking it was very cool lifting my pointer finger on and off the fretboard as I strummed to 'create' sound on the Am and Dm chords.
Then there were the lyrics which seemed to strike a chord with me (no pun intended).
So in my opinion, it's just a very good song and easy chords played well, make for a good jam session.
Press the play button and let me know if you think the same.

PS. If you're keen to find out more about the man - Rodriguez - there is a cinematic documentary coming to a movie theatre near you - called Searching for Sugar Man
and I'll be back at a later time to add more songs by Rodriguez from my songbook. The chords suit MY voice - so I hope they work as well for you...

If you want to see all the chords and song lyrics of Rodriguez I have on my blog - scroll down and click on the Label: "Sixto Rodriguez" - at the bottom of this post

Sixto Rodriguez - The Music

"...Climb up on my music and my songs will set you free..."

Rich Folks Hoax

Am                                Dm     E
The moon is hanging in a purple sky
Am                                 Dm     E
Baby's sleeping while his mother sighs
Dm  E                       Am
       Talking about the rich folks
                                   Dm
The rich folks have the same jokes
              E               Am
But they park in basic places
Am                                       Dm        E
The priest is preaching from a shallow grave
Am                                  Dm          E
Counts his money, then he paints you saved
Dm  E                      Am
       Talking 'bout the young folks
                                Dm
Young folks share the same jokes
             E             Am
But they meet in older places

CHORUS:

    Dm    E                Am
So don't tell me about your success
Dm         E                 Am
Nor your recipes for my happiness
Dm         E                Am
Smoke in bed, I never could digest
          Dm       E                        Am
Those illusions you claim to have going

Am                            Dm      E
The sun is shining as it always done
Am                               Dm      E
Coffin dust is the fate of everyone
Dm  E                      Am
       Talking about the rich folks
                           Dm
The poor create the rich hoax
              E                             Am
And only late breast fed fools believe it

CHORUS:

- and here's a new vid I just found - where you get to see him strumming...

  4. Hi
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yeah, some people have mentioned already that chords don't line up on different songs. Somehow, when I press "publish" on Blogger - the chords seem to settle wherever they like - and not in the place I originally typed them.
It also depends on the type of browser one uses.
Hope it's not too frustrating for you - but play around with the chord sequence and let your ear guide you. Have fun

    1. I use standard tuning. Just played the song through myself - works for me :-)...

  6. Nice dude. I saw another tutorial that suggests using a capo on the 2nd fret. I use it on the f for people who want to try that voicing thanks for the share.
