Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran - chords and lyrics

Enter Mr Ed Sheeran - awesome talent.
I've never quite been able to get a handle on his songs. Usually when I get asked - or decide I like a song enough to figure out the chords and lyrics - I do so. The whole process goes something like this:
1) Hear a song -  on the radio mostly - or someone asks if I've heard a particular song that they like
2) If I enjoy the song enough to want to play it with my guitar - buy the single online - or the CD
3) Put said song on my phone - earphones in - and start writing down the lyrics as I hear them WHY?! - it's just my way of learning the lyrics. Pause/write/rewind/listen/pause/rewind/write...
4) Start playing along with my guitar to match the song I'm hearing - (no mean feat when I haven't studied music) but I enjoy figuring stuff out.
5) Share my effort.
Sure, there are easier ways to get chords and lyrics these days, but this way works for me

It dawned on me recently why I haven't had much 'luck' in figuring out Ed's songs easily than others I have put on this blog. Have you seen his instrument? It (the guitar :-)) is smaller than most and is tuned differently to us 'ordinary' folks. But, Thinking Out Loud - is one song I decided to persevere with until I got it. Now I just gotta improve my technical ability in playing the guitar - and my voice? - well, it is what it is.
For this song, I play it with Capo on 2 most of the time. No Capo? chords will work just fine as well.
And if you don't know how to play the C/B chord...it's a lot easier than you think.

So baby n-o-w
             G                     C       Am7   F
Take me into your loving arms
            G                          C                 Am7       F
Kiss me under the light of a thousand sta-rs   (oh darlin')
               G                            C       Am7
Place your head on my beating heart
                  F       G
I'm thinking o-ut loud
                  Am  C/B     F      C       F         G    C
That maybe we   found  love  right  where  we  are
                  Am  C/B     F      C       F         G    C
And baby    we   found  love  right  where  we  a-re
        Am  C/B     F      C       F         (G)    C
And   we   found  love  right  where  we  are

And of course, solo acoustic is fine. But things shared are much more fun - especially when the others are far more talented (and patient!). Check out this vid below, of Tony and I.
I strummed - using the chords of this post above and Tony did his 'thang'. The best part of the video is between 03:35 and 04:00. Enjoy

Jane S Piddy by Sixto Rodriguez - chords and lyrics

I play this with a Capo on 2 to suit my voice - but the original doesn't use a Capo at all. It just depends if you want to sing it high or low. Nice, easy song to play that repeats the same chords over and over...

Jane S Piddy by Sixto Rodriguez

Intro: play the bottom (thin) E-string - 0  -  2  -  7

G                        Bm7        C               D
Now you sit there thinking - feeling insecure
G                             Bm7                    C                 D
The mocking court gesture claims there is no proven cure
G                      Bm7                C                   D
Go back to your chamber - your eyes upon the wall
            G                  Bm7           C                  D
Coz you got no one to listen - you got no one to call
D                             G       Bm7    C     D
And you think I'm curious
G           Bm7               C                  D
Drifting, drowning - in a purple sea of doubt
      G                      Bm7                      C                        D
You wanna hear she loves you - but the words don't fit the mouth
            G           Bm7       C              D
You're a loser - a rebel - a cause, without
D                            G       Bm7    C     D
But don't think me callous
G                  Bm7          C                   D
Dancing Rosemary - disappearing sister Ruth
     G                      Bm7                         C                    D
It's just your yellow appetite that has you choking on the truth
      G                  Bm7
You gave in - you gave out
     C                            D
Outlived your dreams of youth
D                    G          Bm7    C     D
And I can't get jealous
    G                      Bm7                C                  D
So go on, you'll continue with your nose so open wide
G                      Bm7                C                    D
Knocking on the door that says, "Hurry, come inside"
              G                  Bm7
But don't bother to buy insurance
      C                    D
Coz you've already died
D                        G         Bm7    C     D
And you can't be serious
  G             Bm7             C                 D
I saw my reflection in my father's final tears
      G                      Bm7                    C            D
The wind was slowly melting - San Francisco disappears
G                Bm7
Acid heads, unmade beds
             C                      D
And you Woodward world queers
D                  G         Bm7    C     D
I know you're lonely
D                  G         Bm7    C     D
I know you're lonely
D                  G         Bm7    C     D
I know you're lonely
D                  G         Bm7    C     D
I know you're lonely

Chandelier - Sia - Chords and Lyrics

I'm a bit late to the party on this one. Heard "Chandelier" a few times before, but it didn't quite grip me in a way for me to want to add it to my digital songbook4guitar. Must've had something to do with thinking I'd never reach the falsetto if I tried to sing it. Whistling the high notes - yeah I can do that but I haven't seen any whistle covers on YouTube yet :-)
So, I get given this song and asked if I could play it whilst she sings it. (She does have a rather gorgeous voice but is too shy to appear on YouTube with me for any covers. And just to clarify, I'm not referring to Sia in this instance).
I look at the chords on the sheet she has given me and decide they are foreign to my fingers, so the long journey of transposing the song to easy chords began. Doing it that way made me decide for sure that "Chandelier" will be on this blog. I play these chords with Capo on 1. Works for me...Hope it works for you too
Here it is:

Chandelier by Sia

Capo on 1

When will I learn, I push it down, I push it down
Am
I'm the one, "for a good time call..."

Oh I'm just holding on for tonight - on for tonight - on for tonight

I found this vid by the talented Jen Trani.
She does two versions in her "How To" vid - the latter part (04:00 minutes in) being the chords that were foreign to my experience - so good to see. Check her out on YouTube and subscribe

What Love Is This - Kari Jobe - chords and lyrics

A friend of my wife came over the other day and asked if I could play this song for her on my guitar while she sang it.
She wasn't too keen when I got the recording equipment out and asked if I could film it for YouTube...
So here it is for those of you who want to play it yourselves

What Love Is This

Capo on 1

Intro: G - Em - C - D

G                                             Em
You never change. You are the God You say You are
               C                                D
When I'm afraid - You calm and still my beating heart
                    G                             Em
You stay the same - when hope is just a distant thought
                    C                                          D
You take my pain, and You lead me to the cross
         G                               Em                      C
What love is this? That You gave your life - for me
                                         (D)
And made a way for me to know You
          G                       Em                        C
And I confess, You're always enough - for me
                  D
You're all I need
G                                  Em
I look to You. I see the scars upon Your hands
                    C                                         D
And hold the truth - that when I can't You always can
                  G                         Em
I'm standing here, beneath the shadow of the cross
              C                            D
I'm overwhelmed, that I keep finding o-pen arms
         G                               Em                      C
What love is this? That You gave your life - for me
                                         (D)
And made a way for me to know You
          G                       Em                        C
And I confess, You're always enough - for me
                  D
You're all I need
G                  Em                          C                    D
Jesus in Your suffering, You were reaching - You thought of me
G                  Em                          C                    D
Jesus in Your suffering, You were reaching - You thought of me
         G                               Em                      C
What love is this? That You gave your life - for me
                                         (D)
And made a way for me to know You
          G                       Em                        C
And I confess, You're always enough - for me
                  D
You're all I need
        G                               Em                      C
What love is this? That You gave your life - for me
                                         (D)
And made a way for me to know You
          G                       Em                        C
And I confess, You are always enough - for me
                  D
Always enough for me
Em           C         D
Always enough for me

Stay With Me - Sam Smith - chords and lyrics

What's not to like about this song?
A work colleague played this song for me on her device and I thought it would be good to have a crack at playing "Stay With Me" on guitar. So, why not share the effort with other guitar players looking to learn it as well...
Two options for you here - one without Capo and the other with Capo on 5.

Head on over to Sam's website to view this song ft. Mary J. Blige

And check out this arrangement from "Babs" -
who says it's only 'young people' who can ace a current cover song?... :-D

Stay With Me - Option 1 - no Capo

Intro: C - F - C - F - Dm - G

Am                           F                           C
Guess it's true I'm not good at a one night stand
Am                F                         C
But I still need love coz I'm just a man
Am                      F                   C
These nights never seem to go to plan
Am                      G                                 C
I don't want you to leave - will you hold my hand
                  Am  F       C
Oh won't you stay with me
               Am F C
Coz you're all I need
               Am        F         C
This ain't love - it's clear to see
                 Am F      C
But darling, stay with me
Am        F              C
Why am I so emotional
Am                       F                              C
No it's not a good look - gain some self control
Am                 F                    C
Deep down I know this never works
Am                             G                       C
But you could lay with me so it doesn't hurt
                  Am  F       C
Oh won't you stay with me
               Am F C
Coz you're all I need
               Am        F         C
This ain't love - it's clear to see
                 Am F      C
But darling, stay with me

Am - F - C - Am - F - C - Am - F - C - Am - G - C
oh oh ho ohh oh....
                  Am  F       C
Oh won't you stay with me
               Am F C
Coz you're all I need
               Am        F         C
This ain't love - it's clear to see
                 Am F      C
But darling, stay with me
                  Am  F       C
Oh won't you stay with me
               Am F C
Coz you're all I need
               Am        F         C
This ain't love - it's clear to see
                 Am F      C
But darling, stay with me

So that's it for that part.
And the strumming I've been told is:
Down - Down -Down -  Down - Up
But if you get a bit un-co like me - just strum intuitively to what sounds ok to your ears. When your pets run a mile or your goldfish start swimming crazy, then you know you need more practice :-)

If you like a Ukulele/Mandolin sound to your guitar playing, then slap your Capo on the 5th fret and sing away to these chords:

Stay With Me - Option 2

Capo on 5

But I still need love coz I'm just a man
Em                       C                   G
These nights never seem to go to plan
Em                        D                                  G
I don't want you to leave - will you hold my hand
                     Em C      G

Say Something by A Great Big World - chords and lyrics

Heard this song on the radio the other day and knew instantly that I'd have to add it to my digital songbook4guitar...

The band - A Great Big World, released the song as a single in Sept 2013.
By November, it was re-released with Christina Aguilera - and has since "taken off"

This is the no Capo version (Bm-G-D-A) , but if you like the Capo'd sound - feel free to slap your Capo on 2 and play Am-F-C-G - - - or go further down to Capo on 7 and play Em-C-G-D to give you that Ukulele sound.

Say Something by A Great Big World Ft. Christina Aguilera

Bm                G                       D       A
Say something I'm giving up on you
Bm            G                        D       A
I'll be the one if you want me to
Bm           G                                D       A
Anywhere I would have followed you
Bm                G                       D       A
Say something I'm giving up on you
      D                     F#m
And I am feeling so small
          G
It was over my head
                           D   A
I know nothing at all
      D                         F#m
And I will stumble and fall
           G
I'm still learning to love
                       D       A
Just starting to crawl
Bm                G                       D       A
Say something I'm giving up on you
Bm               G                       D       A
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Bm          G                                D       A
Anywhere I would have followed you
Bm                G                       D       A
Say something I'm giving up on you
       D                         F#m
And I will swallow my pride
                 G
You're the one that I love
                              D      A
And I'm saying goodbye
Bm                G                       D       A
Say something I'm giving up on you
Bm            G                        D       A
I'll be the one if you want me to
Bm           G                                D       A
Anywhere I would have followed you
Bm                G                       D       A

All Of Me - John Legend - chords and lyrics

This song appeared twice in the same week on my feed, so I thought I'd add it to this Songbook. Nice easy chords you can play, with or without a Capo - though a Capo sounds better. It's a longer playing song than most, but enjoy...

All Of Me by John Legend

Capo on 1

Em - C - G - D

Em               C                             G
What would I do without your smart mouth
                 D                             Em
Drawing me in and you kicking me out
           C                    G
Got my head spinning - no kidding
  D                 Em
I can't pin you down
                   C                          G
What's going on in that beautiful mind
                D                      Em
I'm on your magical mystery ride
           C                     G
And I'm so dizzy - don't know what hit me
      D          Am
But I'll be alright
     Am              G
My head's under water
      D                 Am
But I'm breathing fine
Am                   G                  D
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind
       G
'Coz all of me
         Em
Loves all of you
              C
Love your curves and all your edges
           D
All your perfect imperfections
             G
Give your all to me
                Em
I'll give my all to you
              C
You're my end and my beginning
                  D
Even when I lose I'm winning
                     Em  C     G   D
'Coz I give you a----ll of me
                       Em  C      G   D
And you give me a----ll of you oh
Em           C                         G
How many times do I have to tell you
                         D                               Em
Even when you're crying - you're beautiful too
                 C                 G
The world is beating you down
        D                          Em
I'm around through every mood
                C                         G
You're my downfall - you're my muse
              D                                    Em
My worst distraction - my rhythm and blues
                 C
I can't stop singing
     G            D                Am
It's ringing in my head for you
     Am              G
My head's under water
      D                 Am
But I'm breathing fine
Am                   G                  D
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind

'Coz all of me
         Em
Loves all of you
              C
Love your curves and all your edges
           D
All your perfect imperfections
             G
Give your all to me
                Em
I'll give my all to you
              C
You're my end and my beginning
                  D
Even when I lose I'm winning
                     Em  C     G   D
'Coz I give you a----ll of me
                       Em  C      G   D
And you give me a----ll of you oh
                    Am
Give me all of you
Am              G                 D                    Am
Cards on the table - we're both showing hearts
              G                   D
Risking it all, though it's hard
     Am              G
My head's under water
      D                 Am
But I'm breathing fine
Am                   G                  D
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind
       G
'Coz all of me
         Em
Loves all of you
              C
Love your curves and all your edges
           D
All your perfect imperfections
             G
Give your all to me
                Em
I'll give my all to you
              C
You're my end and my beginning
                  D
Even when I lose I'm winning
                      Em  C     G   D
'Coz I give you a----ll of me
                        Em  C      G   D
And you give me a----ll of you oh

Well I've got open eyes

And an open door
         F                C           G           Am
But I don't know what I'm searching for
             F           C          F      C
I should know by now
                 F        C
Well I've a big old heart
         F            C
This I know for sure
         F               C           G       Am
But I don't know what my love is for
             F            C
I should know by now

F - Am/G - C - F -   F - C - F - C

           F       C
Well I wait in line
              F             C
So I can wait some more
         F          C                   G             Am
'Till I can't remember what I came here for
        F               C
But I can't leave now
                 F            C
'Coz I've a light that shines
          F          C
And a love so pure
        F                C         G            Am
But I don't know what to use them for
             F            C
I should know by now

F - Am - G - C - F  (repeat four times)

F
Well I spent my money
  G
I lost my friends
     C                       F
I broke my mobile phone
                              G
Three a.m. and I'm drunk as hell
              C                   F
And I'm dancing on my own
                       G                  C                            F
Taxicabs ain't stopping and I don't know my way home
                                  G                 C                     F
Well it's hard to find a reason when all you have is doubts
                      G                                C                          F
Hard to see inside yourself when you can't see your way out
                      G                              C                            F
Hard to find an answer - when the question won't come out
                                    G
(Oh) Everyone's filling me up with noise
   C                                              F
I don't know what they're talking about
                               G
Everyone's filling me up with noise
   C                                              F
I don't know what they're talking about
                               G
Everyone's filling me up with noise
   C                                              F
I don't know what they're talking about

You see, all I need's a whisper in a world that only shouts
